Bay Cetology founder Jared Towers is involved with cetacean research projects in the South Atlantic, North Pacific, and Southern Oceans that are outside of the scope and jurisdiction of the other organizations he conducts research through. The idea of housing these projects under a new organization begins to take shape and Bay Cetology is created.
The first nine peer-reviewed scientific papers led or co-authored by Bay Cetology team members are published. Our findings are featured by major media outlets globally including the New York Times, Washington Post, National Geographic, Newsweek, NPR, Global, Time, Live Science, Vice, and many others. Our work and team members are featured in several documentaries about cetaceans in North America and Europe.
Our team grows from a well-rounded board of directors and contractors to include staff and students. Our first research vessel is acquired and with conservation-based science at the forefront of our work, we begin to branch out into developing much needed technology to inspire citizen science, communicate findings, and expedite data processing. Several additional long-term collaborations are formed with other organizations and our efforts result in ten more publications.
