Entrapped Dolphins

A pod of Pacific white sided dolphins was recently found entrapped in a shallow tide pool near Qualicum Beach, an unusual situation for this otherwise highly mobile species. Our Executive Director, Jared Towers, spoke with ChekTV and CBC about the event, noting that the dolphins likely entered the area at high tide and became entrapped (rather than stranded) as the water receded. They may have been chasing fish or responding to a nearby threat, such as orcas, which can cause dolphins to hide in shallow waters. Fortunately, they were able to swim free again with the incoming tide. Events like this are a reminder that we are fortunate to share the coast with a thriving marine ecosystem.
