The Photo-ID Data Specialist will support the projects of Bay Cetology. Specifically, the successful candidate will be responsible for the functional maintenance of some of our killer whale photo-ID datasets and associated tools and databases. These datasets and databases are relied on by various scientists and students and the associated tools enable them as well as naturalists, whale-watchers and members of the public to keep up to date with changes to the demographic structure and status of these populations. The successful candidate will also be responsible for communicating effectively with the Executive Director, collaborators and data contributors and will help maintain office and field equipment.
This is an office-based position using Mac operating systems in Alert Bay, BC, Canada with opportunities for field research. The successful candidate must be Canadian or permitted to work in Canada.
Required Skills and Knowledge:

Responsibilities/Duties:
-Support development of and maintain open access database
-Entry of text and image (meta)data into various databases
-Manual recognition of individual killer whales in photo-identification data
-Editing of identification photos as well as aerial and underwater videos
-Upkeep of field and office electronics (drones, cameras, computers, etc.)
-Other related duties as required (data manipulation, analysis, etc.)
Successful candidates will:
-Have all required skills and knowledge and some additional assets
-Reside in Alert Bay for the duration of the contract
-Excel working independently and in small groups without supervision
-Be in the early career stage
-Demonstrate expertise at recognizing individual whales
-Have strong digital photo metadata manipulation and management skills
Salary:
$16 to $20/hour depending on experience
Work Term:
35 hours/week
Late March to late October 2023, with funding-dependent potential for extension

The Photo-ID Data Editor will help enable updates to some of databases and tools maintained and designed by Bay Cetology. Specifically, the successful candidate will be responsible for selecting and editing identification photos of killer whales to specifications required for publication.
This is a volunteer office-based position using Mac operating systems in Alert Bay, BC, Canada with brief opportunities for field research.
Required Skills:
-Experience with photo editing and management software (Photoshop and Photo Mechanic Plus preferred)
-Experience with Mac OS
-Attention to details in images and large image datasets
-Excellent communication
-Marine conservation oriented
-Basic understanding of the biology and ecology of killer whales in the eastern North Pacific
